Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign
masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what
we ought to do, as well as to determine what we shall do.

Prejudices and errors of sense do from all parts discover themselves
to our view; and, endeavoring to correct these by reason, we are
insensibly drawn into uncouth paradoxes, difficulties, and
inconsistencies, which multiply and grow upon us as we advance
in speculation, till at length, having wandered through many intricate
mazes, we find ourselves just where we were, or, which is worse, sit
down in a forlorn scepticism.

Good sense is of all things in the world the most equally distributed,
for everybody thinks himself so abundantly provided with it, that
even those most difficult to please in all other matters do not
commonly desire more of it than they already possess.

Some things are in our control and others are not. Things in our
control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word,
whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body,
property, reputation. command, and, in one word, whatever are not
our own actions. The things in our control are by nature free,
unrestrained, unhindered; but those not in are control are weak,
slavish, restrained, belonging to others. Remember, then, that if
you suppose that things ehich are slavish by nature are also free,
and that what belongs to others is your own, then you will be hindered.

Favours and good offices easily engage their friendship; while the
smallest injury provokes their resentment. Any honour or mark of
distinction elevates them above measure; but they are sensibly touched
with contempt.

Every dilemma based on a complete logical disjunctio, with no
possibility of not choosing, is an option of a forced kind.

There must be simple substances because there are composites; for a
composite is nothing else than a collection or aggregatum of simple
substances.

THe highest excellence is like that of water. The excellence of water
appears in it's benefiting all things, and in it's occupying, without
striving to the contrary, the low place which all men dislike.
